What makes a leader? According to a survey by Harvard Business Review the attributes once ascribed to leadership have shifted over the years in response to changing digital experience and personal values.
While confidence and decisiveness are still paramount for gravitas, pedigree has become less central, and new weight is given to inclusiveness and respect for others. Superior communication skills, including public speaking and the ability to command a room, are still important, but comfort on Zoom, a “listen to learn” orientation, and authenticity are on the rise. Authenticity is now considered key to success; as are dressing for the “new normal”, having an online image, and showing up in person.
The survey includes the following three points to highlight how our views have changed over the past decade:
1. Gravitas
Self-confidence coupled with decisiveness and a clear vision for the organisation will likely always be important, however, inclusivity by hiring for diversity and in terms of making sure everyone feels respected and has equal opportunity to grow have also become essential.
2. Strong communication skills
The ability to command an online meeting is now as important as the ability to command a room. While listening and learning from others is considered far more valuable than communicating with force.
3. The “right” appearance
The power suits of the 80s are confined to ancient closets and the right appearance now rests on authenticity. Executives are expected to reveal some of their personality, not mimic dated ideas of “looking professional”.
Kyocera’s philosophy is closely aligned with these new values. Our guiding principle for work and life centres on the question, "What do we consider to be the right choice as a human being?" This choice is both timeless and dynamic, changing with the spirit and ethics of the time. The notion of “Respect the Divine and Love People,” meanwhile, preserves the spirit of working fairly and honourably, respecting people, our work, our company, and our global community.
By staying true to these basic tenants, we continue to evolve our leadership style changing with the zeitgeist and doing the best for our teams and our partners.
As leadership evolves, one principle remains unchanged: great leaders inspire trust, empower others, and adapt to the world around them. In today’s landscape, authenticity, inclusivity, and strong communication are not just trends—they are essential qualities that define the leaders of tomorrow.
At KDZA, we believe leadership is not about authority, but about responsibility—to our teams, our customers, and our broader community. By embracing the values of respect, fairness, and continuous learning, we don’t just follow the change—we lead it.
How will you refine your leadership approach to meet the moment?
