AI brings new rewards and risks
AI has changed the business landscape significantly, bringing new speed, automation, and efficiency into our workflows, but it is also creating fresh vulnerabilities that many organisations are still unprepared for.
A recent internal discussion at Kyocera centred around this article “How Kyocera’s CISO tackles the threat of cyber risk during AI adoption” highlighted just how quickly cyber threats are evolving. What struck me most was how things have changed. It used to be easy to spot fake images, deepfake videos, or dodgy phishing emails. But today, sophisticated AI can replicate imagery, mimic tone and language, and even imitate someone’s voice. That’s not science fiction, it’s happening now.
In South Africa, we’re particularly exposed. According to Cisco’s 2024 Cybersecurity Readiness Index, only 5% of local businesses are considered ‘mature’ in their cyber posture. That’s down from 19% just a year ago. Our customers are moving fast with digital tools—but many don’t have the resources to defend those tools against increasingly intelligent attacks.
That’s why our role at Kyocera is so critical. We don’t just sell devices or software—we help secure the entire document and information lifecycle. From device encryption and secure boot to firmware controls and AI-powered threat detection, security is built into what we offer, not added on afterwards.
Think of it like a home. A lock helps. An alarm helps. A neighbourhood watch helps. But it’s the combination of layers that creates real peace of mind. And that’s exactly how we design our systems.
As AI becomes more integrated into business tools, our partners need to guide customers through four key steps:
- Know the regulatory rules
- Choose AI partners who design for security, not just performance
- Prioritise employee awareness and data hygiene
- Monitor and adapt—because AI is never “done”
At Kyocera, we’re helping our customers embrace transformation without compromising protection. They trust us with their documents, their data, and their workflows. Let’s make sure that trust is earned—through action, education, and real-world guidance. This captures the heart of the Kyocera Philosophy—doing what is right as a human being—by embracing our role as a trusted guide. As AI becomes more embedded in the workplace, our responsibility is not just to drive innovation, but to help our customers move forward with security, confidence, and care. It’s about leading with empathy, long-term thinking, and a commitment to doing what’s right.
