The recent World Economic Forum in Davos, was attended by more than 600 CEOs and 50 heads of state under the theme Cooperation in a Fragmented World, where participants discussed the complexity and magnitude of the crises facing the world and the urgent need for more collaboration.
Something we have been aware of at Kyocera South Africa for a long time is the need to promote social cohesion as a company, a country and a global community.
In a fragmented world, finding solutions to interconnected problems is challenging, but now more than ever we need our leaders to collaborate and secure a brighter future for all.
To effectively tackle the broader issues facing the world, such as global warming, widespread poverty and inequality, leaders must first find ways to forge social cohesion within and between borders. By broadening the sense of where community starts and ends, they can foster a sense of inclusion that will go a long way to alleviating conflict and building stability across borders.
The World Economic Forum (WeForum) suggests three ways in which leaders can build social cohesion that will better equip them to deal with global issues from a unified front. They are:
1. Encourage dialogue and understanding
Open and honest discussion is a first step to creating a sense of shared purpose and unity, by providing opportunities for leaders to listen to and learn from one another. When people from different backgrounds share their ideas and opinions it helps to connect the dots to finding innovative and out-of-the-box solutions to shared issues.
2. Prioritise collaboration and cooperation
With a world that is so polarized it can be easy to prioritise immediate needs over the greater good. But when leaders look to others to find global solutions to global problems, they can unify efforts to create more effective solutions to complex issues.
3. Invest in education and training
By providing people with the knowledge and skills they need to thrive, leaders can help to promote a respect among diverse groups and foster success.
At Kyocera, we support these suggestions and endeavour to apply them in our internal and external relations, it’s only through unity that we can solve the world’s most pressing issues.
