I was recently referred to the fantastic book titled Polar Bear Pirates and their Quest to Reach Fat City. At first glance it looks like it belongs in the kids’ section, but fortunately I wasn’t fooled by its title or the cover. By embracing youthful curiosity and an engaging cast of characters the book offers a fresh lens on leadership, change management, motivation, and personal growth.
I really enjoyed how, by cloaking these often staid topics in playfulness, the book brings a sense of fun and adventure to the business world where “Neg Ferrets”, “Sinkers” and “Bloaters” are all-too-relatable (and in this context - amusing) characters that need to be navigated to reach success – while at the same time learning not to take ourselves too seriously.
Here’s a synopsis of some of my favourite insights:
As in real life, the Polar Bear Pirates face setbacks and have to develop grit to face failure and use it as a stepping stone to achieve their goals. The book and the fictitious characters remind us of the many attributes a leader must possess to navigate rough seas and guide their teams to victory.
If you’re looking for a management book with lighter touch, relatable and entertaining scenarios and shareable anecdotes and concepts, this is a gem.
