Hidden environmental forces that shape our behaviour

A basic question behind Kyocera’s philosophy is: "What is the purpose of life?". “Clearly stating the purpose and mission of your business” is the first of twelve of Inamori’s Twelve Management Principles that has helped Kyocera to overcome challenges and to progress to this day. By considering the ability for hidden environmental forces to shape our behaviour, we can make changes and remain true to our purpose.

According to a Farnam Street newsletter, “Environment is the hidden force that guides behaviour. One reason it's so effective is that it speaks to your subconscious mind and not your conscious mind. Default behaviours love the path of least resistance. Not only does our environment choose that path, but it pushes us in that direction.”

We’ve all heard the saying, “you’re the average of the five people you spend the most time with”, but did you realise this extends to “we become what we consume”.

What you read and watch today becomes the raw material for tomorrow’s thoughts. Therefore, high-quality input offers high-quality raw materials that help to shape a positive and productive future.

By surrounding ourselves with positive, inspiring people and rich sources of information, we can not only shape our ability to make better choices, but we can ensure a broader, more informed perspective on the world and a calmer mind.

Start by:

  • Curating a rich and diverse information “diet”.
  • Surround yourself with people who live according to the ethical and behavioural standards you find desirable.
  • Design your environment in a way that makes undesired behaviours harder to achieve and desirable behaviour easier.

It makes sense that to get ahead in our industry, we should surround ourselves with information that fosters innovation, collaboration and knowledge share in our teams. We can shape positive and inspired work environments by consciously considering what we watch, read and listen to.

One of the ways to do this is to stay abreast of industry news through Kyocera’s Weekly Industry Highlight Newsletter, and our Monthly Newsletter, which offers the best Kyocera focused content, trends and advice.

Remember what we put in today, is what we become tomorrow!
