Giving beyond money and ‘stuff’: A Kyocera perspective

As we approach the season of gift-giving, whether or not Christmas is celebrated in your home, it’s a natural time to think about our impact on our community and those around us, and how we can make a meaningful difference in the world. At Kyocera, we are guided by the principle of “doing what is right as a human being,” a philosophy that reminds us that generosity is about much more than financial contributions—it’s about the actions we take and the values we embody every day. 

Ways to give beyond money and physical gifts

Giving doesn’t have to involve your wallet and purse. In fact, some of the most impactful ways to give are through time, energy, and compassion. Here are six meaningful ways to give:

  • Volunteer your time: Help a community project, mentor someone, or support a local cause. Your time is a powerful resource.
  • Share your skills: Offer your expertise to guide others, teach a new skill, or provide professional support where it’s needed.
  • Lend emotional support: A simple conversation, a kind word, or a listening ear can bring comfort and connection.
  • Donate goods: Share books, clothing, or items you no longer need with organisations that help those in need.
  • Advocate for causes: Raise awareness about the issues you care about by sharing resources, starting conversations, or supporting campaigns.
  • Take care of the environment: Simple actions like recycling, conserving energy, or participating in clean-up initiatives contribute to a healthier planet. 

Each of these reflects the essence of Kyocera’s philosophy—contributing to society, living responsibly, and ensuring that our actions align with ethical values. 

Our philosophy is rooted in the belief that our greatest impact comes not just from what we produce, but from how we act. When we give—whether it’s through time, skills, or advocacy—we contribute to a culture of connection and responsibility that aligns with our mission as a company. 

These acts of giving that go beyond money and physical gifts aren’t just altruistic gestures; they reinforce the values that aim to inspire others to give in ways that align with their capabilities and passions. Every small action we take has the potential to create ripples of change. 

Black Friday spurs a spending flurry at this time of year and then year-end gifting plays a big part in consumerism, but we don’t have to fall into these traps. I encourage all of us to reflect on how we can give back in meaningful ways, not just during the festive season but throughout the year. Kyocera’s success is built on the contributions of individuals who live by the philosophy of doing what is right, and it’s these values that will continue to guide us into 2025 and beyond. 

Mark Twain said “Kindness is a language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see.” I believe we underestimate the power of a kind word, a smile, a sympathetic ear, or the smallest act of caring and that these little acts of kindness are often worth more than a great deal of money.

Together, we can continue to lead with purpose and bring these acts of kindness into our everyday lives, at home and at work.
