Week 10

Disruption is not something to be feared but embraced

Last week we considered the “how” of unlearning in order to remain agile, so this week I thought we could take things a step further and think about disruption.

At KDZA, we pride ourselves on exploring new frontiers and seeking solutions that others avoid, in fact, I’d go so far as to say that where others might fear disruption, we embrace it. As always, this ethos is driven by our founder, Dr. Kazuo Inamori, and has led to many exciting innovations, such as the development of multifunctional millimetre-wave radars, camera-LIDAR fusion sensors, AI-integrated cameras, and advanced energy conversion devices – showcasing Kyocera's role in promoting safer mobility, energy efficiency, and sustainability.

We believe disruption can serve as a wake-up call for businesses to reinvent themselves, adapt to change, and seize new opportunities. To quote an article by Reinvent CoLab, a corporate coaching company, “Disruption serves as a catalyst for change, forcing businesses to re-evaluate their strategies, processes, and even their core identity. Companies that embrace disruption as an opportunity rather than a threat often emerge stronger and more resilient.”

The article goes on to say that a study by McKinsey & Company shows that companies that actively embrace disruption outperform their peers and achieve higher shareholder returns.

Disruption encourages a culture of innovation, because when we are out of our comfort zone, we are forced to become more creative – sparking exciting new ways to approach challenges, or even coming up with entirely new product ideas.

This has certainly been the case at Kyocera over the years. By emphasising
innovation as a core aspect of our philosophy. Instead of following others, we constantly strive to push the boundaries of innovation, leading to significant advancements in fine ceramics, solar power systems, medical and dental products, and document solutions. The ECOSYS range of printers and MFP devices, for example, emphasises Kyocera's approach to innovation, particularly in response to changing work models that took place as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, and created a demand for compact, high-quality printing solutions.

Through these initiatives, Kyocera demonstrates its commitment to embracing disruption and pushing innovation in sustainability, and technology to contribute to the advancement of society. In general, disruption can create opportunity and in today’s fast changing environment, successful businesses and people will seize these opportunities to drive results
