4th Industrial Revolution is actually an evolution (MOWT8)

23 February 2018

I don’t know about you, but I’m hoping for a trip to Cape Town on 18-20 September 2018, when Africa Tech Week will be happening. They say that “the multi-sector platform will unpack South Africa and Africa's steps to prepare for, embrace and leverage developmental opportunities unlocked by the Fourth Industrial Revolution.”

I’m intrigued by this term, the “4th industrial revolution” and if you haven’t watched the video of Richard Mullholland’s talk on this subject, I encourage you to do so. It’s 10 mins of powerful thought:

I agree with him that the definition of a revolution, “a sudden complete or marked change in something”, isn’t what we’re experiencing in our industry. There is no ‘sudden event’. It is more like an evolution where we’re seeing constant, interesting and progressive development that keeps us on our toes.

Over the years, we have leveraged our printers and multifunctional products, incorporating long-life technology development alongside our proactive software technology improvement. More recently, the proliferation of mobile information devices and cloud computing has led to us offering the ability to perform document-related tasks anywhere at any time.

At the same time, the increasing popularity of information sharing means that the need for data management and security services has also grown and we’ve addressed that. As the document management environment within the business world continues to change, the role we play is not confined simply to sales and maintenance services for document management equipment, but also extends to providing the customer with total document solutions leading to improved operational efficiency.

I’m excited and inspired by the way things have been, and are, changing. IT disruption (or as the alarmists are calling it, the 4th Industrial Revolution) is not scary, we are in the middle of it, we have been riding the wave for a while now, and we’re doing great.
